Summary

This study reviews the chronological divisions of the Late Migration Period (Späte Völkerwanderungszeit) in Central Germany established by Berthold Schmidt (B. Schmidt, Späte Völkerwanderungszeit; B. Schmidt, Katalog [Nord- und Ostteil]; B. Schmidt, Katalog [Südteil]). It is based on a newly-developed typology and chronology for the archaeological material from women s graves dating to the 5th and 6th cent. AD. A revision seems to be necessary as since B. Schmidt wrote his paper in 1961 no further results on the chronology of the Merovingian Period have been published for Central Germany (Saxony, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thuringia), while there are new and detailed chronological systems for other regions (South Germany, Lower Rhine valley, France, etc.; confer for example U. Koch, Pleidelsheim; Siegmund, Niederrhein). Furthermore, modern research can draw on several methods of procedure for the establishment of chronologies which were not yet known in the 1960s.

Without exception the study uses published material; the majority of the data comes from B. Schmidt s catalogues. It is centred on well or richly furnished women s graves as – due to their composition and them being well published - these assemblages are well suited to the establishment of a typology and subsequent chronology. Men's graves are not considered, because in the 5th and 6th cent. AD these are much less detailed than those of women. Undoubtedly it would be interesting to examine all male and female burials together with all burials from the 7th cent. AD. But this would demand a more precise examination of the material. Among the analyses that were desirable would be a detailed description of the beads or X-ray examinations, especially of belt components, in regard of incrustations.

After a short introduction the history of research into the Merovingian Period in Central Germany is briefly outlined (chapter 1.1). Then the studies topic and objectives are formulated more precisely (chapter 1.2). The following passages contain remarks on the typology, which is a necessary requirement for establishing the relative chronology using correspondence analysis. Only for some selected find categories sensitive to chronological changes types are defined (chapter 3). These deviate in some instances from B. Schmidt's classification (chapter 5.3.1). All finds that I consider relevant are assigned to a type category and for each category a list is given with all the individuals belonging to it. B. Schmidt s catalogues and analyses are partly incomplete, with some types not being properly defined or lacking clear presentation. This makes the development of an independent typology seem necessary, both on the basis of and in comparison with results from recent research. As a result fibulae and other trinkets are well represented in the typology, while pottery, combs and beads can only be considered to a lesser extend, if at all. Here the thrown ceramic bowls from Thuringia make an exception (Thüringer Drehscheibenschalen THDSS; chapter 3.11.2.2). The main reasons for the uneven representation of find categories are insufficient documentation and publication. It does not reflect actual find densities.

In chapter 3 all finds belonging to a type category are listed before its discussion and definition. Here A comprises all finds from Central Germany that have been used for correspondence analysis, while B denotes further objects from the same region, which are referred to for comparison. Finds from outside Central Germany (external graves [list 1, chapter 8.1.1]) that have been incorporated into the correspondence analysis are listed under C. By considering external women's graves, find types that occur infrequently in Central Germany can be included into the analysis. It also provides a direct connection of the results with other chronologies (chapter 5.3.2.).

In this study correspondence analysis is successfully applied as a method of arranging the find material and establishing phases for a relative chronology (chapter 5.1 and 5.1.1). It's premises determine which finds are selected for the analysis. Presenting the result of the correspondence analysis by plotting the eigenvalues yields a graph approaching the form of a parabola of degree one. It can also be expressed as a contingency table of well shaped diagonal structure (fig. 129 – 132).

On a trial basis the cemeteries of Stößen, Weimar, Obermöllern and Rathewitz are subjected to a spatial analysis of type distributions. This, however, does not contribute to the relative chronology. Apparently graves on the Central German cemeteries published to date were rather determined by the principle of social kinship (clan cemeteries) than by time (chapter 6).

The order of grave assemblages arrived at by correspondence analysis is subdivided into relative chronological phases, using the contingency table and the parabola graph. These phases are converted into an absolute chronology using conventional dating methods (coins, comparison with other chronologies) (chapter 5.2). Here it turns out that sources from the Central German material itself are too scanty and that again external material (coin bearing burials) have to be drawn upon.

I n general B. Schmidt's results can be confirmed on the basis of the material published in his catalogues. There are, however, differences concerning the dating of individual graves (list 6, chapter 8.1.6) and the absolute dating of the chronological phases. All in all four such phases are established:

MD (Mitteldeutschland [Central Germany]) Phase 1 (c. 400 – 430/440 AD);

MD Phase 2 (c. 430/440 – 470/480 AD);

MD Phase 3 (c. 470/480 – 530 AD);

MD Phase 4 (530 – 560/570 AD);

Phase 5 (starting at c. 560/570 AD) which is also outlined has to be verified by the analysis of larger quantities of finds and assigned a date for it's end. The result is illustrated by four type charts (fig. 134 - 137).

In 1961 B. Schmidt suggested to split his group III (525-600 AD) into an elder (III a [525-560]) and a younger phase (III b [560-600]). In respect of absolute dating this can be confirmed (chapter 5.3.1). Concerning the phases' contents, however, there are some differences from the concept developed here. Most of the finds that B. Schmidt dated to belong to his group III b now appear in this studies Phase MD 4 (530-560/570), which – in respect of absolute chronology – corresponds to Schmidt's group III a. B. Schmidt recognised this problem himself. In 1982 he proposed to shift the approximate date for the end of group III from 600 to 580 AD but failed to substantiate his statement on the basis of the archaeological material. This study makes clear that the hypothesis of an earlier end of group III is correct. Thus the bulk of the material from Central German women's graves which Schmidt had assigned to his phase III b can be put into or at the end of Phase MD 4 as defined in this study and ending at around 560/570 AD.

The finds from burials of female individuals compiled by B. Schmidt and those published elsewhere – often lacking all information on grave context – are not suitable for securely structuring the period up to the 7th cent. and beyond by chronological phases inferred from correspondence analysis (chapter 4).

Chapter 5.3 contains a comprehensive comparison of the results with B. Schmidt's groups and other current chronologies. Some of these are also confronted with each other. This is not done by simply synchronising the absolute dates, but rather by comparing the phases' contents or individual types. These comparisons show that the chronology established here fits well into the existing systems for the Merovingian Period (fig. 143).

In conclusion it shall be pointed out that the results on typology and relative and absolute dating gained in this study are the basis for a future elaboration of a chronological system for the Merovingian Period in Central Germany which is to be up to date and based on all finds that are documented today.

In totale sono state elaborate quattro fasi cronologiche: Germania centrale fase 1 (circa 400 - 430/40 d. C.), Germania centrale fase 2 (circa 430/40 - 470/80 d. C.), Germania centrale fase 3 (circa 470/80 - 530 d. C.) e Germania centrale fase 4 (530 - 560/70 d. C.). L'accennata fase 5 (inizio circa 560/70 d.
